Perched above the 18th tee in the Nakoma resort custom home builder Bill Reid coordinated the design and ultimately will build this custom home for the right homeowner. Prioritizing quality over size, flexibility abounds with customization capabilities up to 4000 square feet.. During the design process the team saw a pattern developing that many folks did not necessarily desire a large home but instead preferred quality. Recognizing that this is not a universal feeling Bill Reid and his Architect developed a design that can unlock the door to flexibility. The lot at 744 Red Sky was carefully scrutinized and selected to design a home that can tap into the lower floor basement area if desired. The internal stair case is one of our pathways that meanders down to multiple possibility for families to enjoy the setting.
“With plans, engineering and approvals from the Nakoma Community Association in hand we just need the right family in search of a new home in the Lost Sierra “says Bill.
The Rustic Modern design is situated on the lot maximizing the panoramic views while sensitive to the size, scale and surroundings. The home was carefully sited to allow practically no steps to the front door for ease of access. A bridge flows off the driveway towards the entry where a covered are protects visitors from the elements. In harmony with the entry bridge the Laundry and Mudroom wing suspends between the garage and home lightly impacting the site. As you approach the Mud Room terraced natural stone steps guide you down to the unique indoor/outdoor living area. The covered area is protected from the elements by a glass roll up door system which opens to the view of the 18th Tee and fairway. As you walk through this special area an entire lower floor is available for you to customize to your lifestyle. Separated into two areas opportunities for a recreation room, bunk house, office or art studio are just a few examples. Linking these two spaces is the indoor outdoor living area which if customized to all indoor living area achieves a home nearly 4,000 square feet. The outdoor patio strikes an angle accentuating the views and a perfectly placed fire pit for family gatherings. The deck above is supported by board form concrete columns combined with a system for diverting rain water from above allowing for dry and protected space beyond the living area. These designs act as solutions to mountain living for all seasons.

The first floor plan is comprised of two master suites on each end of the home with a third bedroom and bath situated in between. This design was conceptualized from informal focus groups to tailor solutions for a variety of lifestyles. This dual master suites enables our homeowners to entertain another couple or family while still enjoying the privacy and views. Furthermore the lower daylight basement can achieve a place for the kids to land leaving the adults the upper floor to their own.
A mudroom and laundry span between the main home and the three car garage. The garage has been designed in such a way as it does not become the dominant architectural element of the home, rather it angles off the main home and is tucked against the trees and natural gullies. Once again this custom home takes advantage of the views overlooking Nakoma Resort by strategically placing the open floor plan kitchen. The kitchen will feature integrated built in refrigeration and commercial style cooking appliances, rustic modern cabinetry style and finishes of your choice and slab stone or quartz counter-tops. The high ceilings within the great room once again tap into the expansive views with a glass door system that bifolds open to the full width of the opening. Conversing with your guests at the open kitchen and island design is a pleasure while in the background the contemporary wood stove keeps the family warm.

The exterior of the home stays true to the goal of a quality custom home suited for the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The siding material is planned for a rustic wood with two complimenting finishes. Montanas Charwood will be used as the trim which sets off the main siding we plan to use. Montana Timber Products is a great find for our home and although certainly not the least expensive they offer a variety of woods and finishes that are superior to a regular wood finish or a composite material used in lower end projects.
Corrugated Weathering Steel elements complete the siding ensemble. This material brings us back to the old west but has a unique composition which allows the material to rust and gain a patina then eventually ceases for a lifetime and low maintenance.
One important element of quality home, especially in the Sierras, are the windows. The amount of glass to leverage the views is important but a responsible builder must strike a balance form energy performance to maintenance and value. Sierra Pacific Windows accomplishes this objective offering an aluminum clad exterior available in a variety of colors with a wood interior for warmth and beauty. There are less expensive material far and wide and even more expensive but this product is a reasonable solution aligning with the quality objective we have.
